Introducing Proxmox Datacenter Manager

Proxmox has recently unveiled the alpha release of its latest project, the Proxmox Datacenter Manager (PDM). This innovative tool is designed to provide a centralized overview of individual nodes and clusters, streamlining operations for IT administrators and service providers. Keep in mind that Proxmox Datacenter Manager is currently an alpha release, meaning features are missing, there are probably bugs, and you shouldn’t rely on it for production use.

What is Proxmox Datacenter Manager?

Proxmox Datacenter Manager is a centralized management platform developed entirely in Rust, encompassing the backend API server, CLI tools, and a newly designed frontend. The frontend leverages a modern widget toolkit, enhancing user experience with improved accessibility, speed, and compatibility. PDM enables basic management tasks, including the migration of virtual guests, without necessitating cluster network configurations.

Key Features:

  • Centralized Overview: Monitor and manage all your Proxmox nodes and clusters from a single interface, simplifying administrative tasks.
  • Virtual Guest Migration: Facilitate the migration of virtual machines across different nodes without the need for complex cluster networking setups.
  • Modern Web Interface: Experience a refreshed user interface built with a new widget toolkit, offering enhanced accessibility and responsiveness.

A look ahead

While currently in alpha, Proxmox Datacenter Manager is poised to become an indispensable tool for centralized infrastructure management. Future developments are expected to introduce additional features and enhancements, further solidifying its role in the Proxmox ecosystem. There are a lot of exciting features planned, and you can see what’s coming ahead in the Proxmox Datacenter Manager roadmap.

Looking at Proxmox Datacenter Manager

Since we have a lot of Proxmox VE nodes, we decided to install Proxmox Datacenter Manager, connect a couple of nodes, and take it for a test drive. When you head to the Dashboard, you’ll see a familiar view. Just like your node or cluster, this will give an overview of everything going on.

The modern interface is clean, yet familiar. You can see that we have a view of all the guests on the nodes added to Proxmox Datacenter Manager.

When we view a node, we can see an interface similar to what we see when we directly access a node. We can see the guests, tags added, server load, CPU usage, and all the other stats we’re familiar seeing. We’re excited to see where Proxmox Datacenter Manager goes. If you want to try it, you can get the ISO image from https://enterprise.proxmox.com/iso/ and install it either on a bare metal host or even a VM.
